Summer Leadership Conference Practice

In this enlightening conference session, we delve into the significance of information and media literacy and its pivotal role in modern-day instruction. Join us as we explore the importance of equipping students with critical thinking and research skills, empowering them to navigate the vast and ever-evolving digital information landscape.

The Mental Health Task Force, aligned with our strategic framework, will elevate and promote mental health and wellness for the Virginia Beach community.

In order to thrive, adults and students need to feel a sense of belonging and significance in their school and classroom communities. In this session, we will explore three ways that administrators and teacher leaders can build and foster belonging and significance among students that will contribute to a positive community where students experience greater social-emotional and academic growth. Strategies will be modeled and meaningful collaboration time will result in envisioning belonging and significance in action to instill hope for a successful school year.

Participants will engage in deeper learning experiences that promote advancing equity through powerful works of substance in literacy and social studies. In depth discussions about how to scaffold tasks while using balanced assessment practices to guide instruction will be the focus of this session.

DTAL and DOSL join together to support coaching teams as they foster the coach/administrator relationship and strengthen feedback.  This session will focus on ways to support various types of teachers through powerful feedback. Participants will use the coaching profile as a building block to leverage their work.

Evidence based literacy instruction? What’s that? This session will provide an overview of the research which drives the development of the VBCPS curricular resources. Participants will engage in conversations to support educators in aligning instructional practices with current literacy research through the lens of igniting hope among teachers.

Effective intervention processes begin with empowered classroom teachers who take a leading role in supporting academic and behavioral domains. A proactive, collaborative team focused on a multi-tiered approach using objective, data-driven decisions is vital to the SRT process. This presentation focuses on one school’s journey to improve our SRT process.

Participants will explore the explicit vocabulary routine, and components of the orthographic mapping portion of the small group plan in literacy to develop a better understanding of morphology instruction. Connections will be made to the science curriculum and how these practices can deepen scientific understandings.

Participants will be introduced to the Zones of Regulations. They will utilize ways to incorporate SEL learning through the Zones of Regulations by supporting students through various strategies. Attendees will be exposed to ideas to support staff and students through problem solving, self-regulation and social skills. Additionally, administrators will be able to use strategies to support staff and students and identify how teachers can use the Zones of Regulation with their students and to support teaching social/emotional skills in their classroom.

Through project-based courses, high school students learn project management, networking, customer service, photography, lighting, and video production. In addition, students gain professional certifications in Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro, After Effects, and InDesign. As a result, students graduate school prepared to enter college, start a career, or become an entrepreneur.

Session Presentation

The COST team is a multidisciplinary team of school staff who meet weekly to discuss and monitor student academics, attendance, and social-emotional support. Through the ongoing data collection, tracking and analysis, the COST team focuses on the following: OTG, Chronic Absenteeism, CHINS, Dropouts, and SEL Resources.

During the 2023-2024 school year, all English teachers will focus on 5 domains in order to be able to provide strong curricula in a safe and equitable environment to support students in their journey to become future ready.

Come learn how the PBIS team and the AVID team joined forces to build the capacity of our Instructional Leadership Team. It was a rebuilding year for us and as a result of our team getting on the same page, our PBIS TFI for Tier 1 and Tier 2 improved and our ILT was empowered to increase their instructional leadership capacity.

In this session, participants will work collaboratively to analyze the overarching commonalities between the Strategic Action Agenda, AVID, PBIS, and SEL. Participants will learn about the next steps Virginia Beach Middle will take to ensure alignment between the Strategic Action Agenda, division-initiatives, professional learning opportunities, and observation feedback. This session will highlight what we learned during Year 2 implementation and how that will drive our focus for Year 3.

Mike has dedicated his life to serving the nation—and empowering people to build positive relationships and become more resilient.  Mike lives on a 32-acre farm in North Carolina with his wife Genevieve and their four children; Eli, Adelaide, Therese and Matthias.

A 2002 graduate of The U.S. Military Academy at West Point with a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics, Mike was commissioned as an Intelligence Officer, serving in three combat tours with the First Cavalry Division and 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne). His service includes deployment to Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2004-2005—that involved the Battles of Fallujah and Najaf. Mike also deployed to Kandahar, Afghanistan, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in 2006-2007 and 2009. On those tours, he worked with NATO forces, to include serving as a lead intelligence planner for one of the largest NATO-led combat operations in history. Mike earned two Bronze Star Medals from these tours. 

Following his third deployment, Mike attended the University of Michigan from 2009-2011, where he studied positive psychology and leadership under the tutelage of the co-founder of positive psychology, Dr. Chris Peterson. He went on to serve as an Assistant Professor in Psychology & Leadership at the U.S. Military Academy from 2011-2014. 

Mike is the CEO of The Character & Leadership Center and has done leadership development with over 100 organizations, including Amazon, Special Forces Command, McKinsey & Co, the New Jersey Devils, Boston Celtics, Spartan Race and Michigan Men’s Basketball team. He is also co-founder & CEO of the Positivity Project—a non-profit organization with the mission to empower America’s youth to build positive relationships. With 542 partner schools, the organization reaches 332,000 children daily.  He is the co-author of Lead Yourself First by Bloomsbury Press (2017). The book focuses on how solitude strengthens people’s character—and their ability to lead with clarity, balance and conviction. His most recent book, Leadership is a Relationship: How to Put People First in a Digital World, is an insightful collection of interviews with leaders who have succeeded by prioritizing the wellbeing of other people.
